XOXO 2010~

Dear Diary,
2010 is coming to an end. While I look forward to the next year, I couldn’t help but be a bit sad.... It has been a year full of new adventures and surprises!

On the last day of the 2010, I would like go back to the basics and remember the little reasons why I started Frills and Ruffles; like the lace on my sheer blouse, the crinkles on my leather jacket, the red soles of my favorite pumps, and the zippers on the shoulders of my sweater.

Thank you for a wonderful year and see you in 2011!

Leather for the Ladies

Dear Diary,
For a long time I’ve preached about throwing away the labels we put on our clothes so we can recognize the true potential our closets really have to offer. My signature: dress down your occasional pieces for a day (see Stop The Labeling). However, I recently realized that I’m guilty of holding a stereotype over leather apparel for the longest time!

When it comes to chic and modern leather apparel, Balmain’s runway shows immediately come into my mind: stick thin models striding down the runway with skinny leather pants and military inspired leather jackets, looking so tough and full of attitude, which I am totally a fan of.

But it wasn’t until recently when I found this faux leather skirt with ruffle detail around the waist that I discovered the more feminine side of leather. So tonight, it seems only appropriate that I treat my newfound style to a romantic night out on the town and a Dallas style steak dinner.

A Casual Luxe Miracle

Dear Diary,
Christmas is my favorite time of the year! There’s something magical about holiday decor and sparkling lights on the rooftops. Somehow the red, green, and gold all seem to go so happily together!

When I was packing for Dallas, the single most important question dawned on me: “What do I wear on the morning of Christmas?” Cotton PJ’s with Reindeers was definitely out of the question (although it did occur to me…) but surely there’s a modern option that also fits the spirit and magic of the holidays with all the comfort too. Luckily, I had a little miracle hiding in my dresser- a soft v-neck grey sweater with silver sequin stripes. Wear it with a pair of newly modernized Jeggings (thank for you for the invention!) and this Christmas I will be lounging luxuriously at my in-law’s and watching the nieces’ eyes light up when they open their presents from Santa!

Spring Leap

Dear Diary,
So I might have jumped the gun just a bit… last weekend the weather got slightly warmer and I was more than excited to break out my newly purchased shorts. So while the rest of America was getting hit by heavy storms, I was happily skipping around in a pale blouse and wide-legged shorts. Perhaps it’s because I am dying to start wearing pieces from my shopping trip to Taiwan back in November. Sorry America, if you find this outfit not so relatable, consider this an early preview for my Spring attire!

Ever since early Fall I have been obsessed with high-waist bottoms. I had a hard time finding ones that didn’t make me look like a clown, but I was delighted to find great ones in Taiwan. These shorts, which I adore, had some serious identity problems! At first glimpse, the wide-leg openings and the faux bow belt make them fun and flirty, but taking a closer look, the thick wool material, dark color, and the front pleats are serious and formal. Totally contradictory - which is just my cup of tea!

Going Supernova!

Dear Diary,
I am pretty disappointed at myself… because once again I missed the opportunity to watch the Geminid meteor shower. I thought I would have the determination to drag myself out my cozy bed at 3 am in the morning and catch a glimpse of this spectacular show, but I proved myself to be wrong.

Oh well~ Just because I missed the dazzling event at night doesn’t mean I can’t add some sparkle to my day. Inspired by the fragments of Asteroid 3200 Phaethon and the holiday season, I’ve decided to add some glam to my usual tank and jeans combo – a sequin blazer to the outer layer and I have transformed to a sparkling star! While sequin is usually associated with eveningwear, it wouldn’t be true F&R style if I didn’t bring the fun to the daytime!

Modern Safari

Dear Diary,
I’ve been enjoying the little natural phenomenon happening quietly around me. Trees all over are turning into beautiful yellow, orange and red. Everyday on my way to work, I take a millisecond to pause, breath and think, “what a beautiful day”!

Sadly, beautiful things don’t last forever and moments like these are slipping away quickly (evident with the crunchy leaves by my feet). But I’m reminded constantly that everyday is an adventure. SO, I’m starting mine today with yellow jewel tone top, military green bubble skirt, and lace up boots!

Date Night Separates

Dear Diary,
Tonight is not just another night. It’s a SUSHI date night! Oh sushi, I have been waiting for this moment for too long and tonight I want to look my best for you!

So as I was getting dressed for my beloved tuna nigiri, I noticed I was automatically drawn towards the dress section of my closet. “Do date nights and dresses come hand-in-hand?“ Well, it’s definitely the easy way out, but it would be just too predictable. Convinced there’s an alternative solution to this predicament, I physically pulled myself away. Luckily from my recent shopping trip I returned with a great dark mini skirt with draping details. Paired with a contrasting silk top with a sheen and chucky necklace for some pizzazz around the neck, I found a way to look worthy of some yellowtail.

Finding Your Way

Dear Diary,
Every once in a while, when we have been left alone for a long time, we deviate from our tracks. We’ll take small moments get our ourselves together by stretching during a long workday or going for a run after work to clear our minds. But every so often, we enlist some help for when we lose our way, so we consult our religious leaders such as Dalai Lama to achieve Zen enlightenment or we enroll in Weight Watchers to get our bodies back in shape. Whatever it might be, taking a moment to get back on track is the key to going further in your life!

I am no exception. After being busy for so long I lose sense of who I am. So this weekend, I sought some guidance from my own spiritual guru – Olivia Palermo. I can always count on her to remind me that essential pieces found in any wardrobe can look OH-SO-CHIC!

Bad Girls Always Have More Fun

Dear Diary,
I admit that I can be a bit of a rebel sometimes. Actually, my husband would outright say I am defiant. That’s the way my family is (yup, every single one of them!), so fortunately he can’t ask me to change and accepts me for who I am (whole heartedly). So to celebrate my roots, I was inspired to put together a sleek cold-weather look.

Clean lines, hard edges and strong shoulders are keys to a sleeker look. Luckily, I found an outerwear piece that consists of all those qualities in one. But I wouldn’t be true to myself if I didn’t offset the harsh style with soft tussled curls and a slouchy bag (gosh, I can be so complicated!). My husband called this look Russian Military inspired, but I call it my ready-to-kick-some-doors-down look.

A Winter Fairy Tale

Dear Diary,
Recently I had to tell a bedtime story. Here’s how it went:

In a faraway place, there lived a stylish girl named F&R. Her hair was not as black as coal, her lips were not as red as rose, and her skin was not as white as snow. F&R’s nemesis, the Queen of Winter, was very cruel. F&R dreamed of one day being swept away by a fabulous coat.

As F&R grew more stylish, the Queen became more jealous of F&R. She decided to trap F&R in her house over the Thanksgiving weekend with record breaking low temperatures.

Then one day, talented Dian von Furstenberg dropped a beautiful camel long coat on her lap and whispered, “it’s all about the texture!”. Blending alpaca, wool and angora, out comes a luxurious and feminine long coat. With a touch of the coat, F&R was freed from the cold. No prince, no dwarfs, F&R still danced her way into the sunset where she lived stylishly ever after!

The End.

Night night F&R readers!
